Rosa and William homesteaded in Oelrichs, SD around 1888. Clinton H. Vorce, was born there in 1889. Their place was near Oelrichs - along the banks of Horse Head River. (Roy Vorce was quoted in a letter dated Feb 9, 1976 as saying that there is a bridge there near the town that the old timers called the Vorce Bridge.) Roy said that their first house was a sod shanty, as most of the homes were when the first settlers homesteaded or filed on the land at that time.

Quoting from a letter written by Roy Menzo Vorcee to his sister Collie on Feb 9, 1976..... "Mother" refers to Rosa Lilly Davey Vorce and "Dad" is William Whiting Vorce.

"You asked why did they leave Oelrichs - Mother told me that she had a great big garden there and of course it took a lot of hard work - One day a hail storm came along and destroyed the whole garden, didn't have a thing left. She told Dad right then if he wanted to stay in that country he could but she was leaving and going back to Nebraska and that is just what she did - Dad sold out his place there and finally went back to Nebraska and to Mother. He leased a farm there near Creighton and that's where he had his stroke, he doctored there for a long time then he decided to go back to Hot Springs where he could take bathes to try and see if he could get his health back again. So he had two teams of very good horses he built a covered wagon, got a small camper's cook stove and other things necessary to travel with and took off for the Black Hills. He was gone for quite a long time. Mother never heard from him. She finally decided she would go to Hot Springs and look for him. Her folks didn't want her to go, but when she decided to do something she did just that. So Mother loaded us kids on the train and we left Nebraska for good. We found him alright at Hot Springs and was he ever glad to see us. He had a small farm that was about four miles up the canyon from cold Brook North - toward Wind Cave. There was a house and barn on the land then, it is all gone now. There was a nice spring of water from the base of a cliff there. We lived there for a while. We all had the scarlet fever there and Dr. Hargens would drive out there with his one horse buggy most every day to see how we were getting along, and we didn't have to call him either. He would say I got to worrying about the children so here I am to take care of them. We didn't have a telephone those days like we have now ..... Clint was born at Oelrighs - May 17, 1889, I was born at Bazile Mills, Nebraska, near Creighton - May 2, 1893. I don't remember Mother ever saying where her parents came from to Nebraska."

John and Nettie Separated when Ramon was 5 and Laura was 7 years old. After the separation in about 1904 she moved to Vinton, Iowa where she worked for the college for the blind as a cook. Reason to the separation and later a divorce was that Frank had a terrible temper and either pushed or threw Laura Belle down the stairs. Info from Isabel (Fisher) Diltz remembers her father, Ed Fisher who was the town constable, moved "Nettie" out of the house. Frank later asked Ed Fisher's new wife, if she left him he would move her out for nothing.

Vorces moved form Michigan to Iowa in 1918.
